The People of Cote
d'Ivoirel The Capital l The Animals
There are many different tribes in Cote d'Ivoire. Here are a few that live in different parts of the country. Senoufou - live in northern Cote d'Ivoire. They are very good farmers. A man is highly respected if he is a good farmer. Community is very important to the Senoufou. Everyone eats as a group. The fields are worked together, the food stored together and each family contributes to the village. Dan - live in the west of Cote d'Ivoire. They are known for their dramatic stilt dances and masks. There is one dance they perform where young girls are balanced on knives. The girls are not allowed to make a sound during the dance. Ngan - live in central Cote d'Ivoire. They are mostly farmers and grow coffee, rice and cocoa. There is a male chief in the village who is assisted by a female chief. The people socialize around a large Kapok (silk-cotton) tree in the middle of the village. The tree is called the "head of the village." |
