Yamosoukro was named the capital of Cote d'Ivoire in 1983 by the president, Houphuet Boigney (say Who-fway Bwan-yay), because it was his home town. Before then the coastal city, Abidjan, was the capital. Abidjan is still considered the economic capital of the country.

To make Yamosoukro look like the capital city, the then-President Boigney had wide paved roads constructed in the city. He also built a palace home and the second largest basilica (church) in the world there. You can still visit the president's crocodiles.
