The Land l The Capital l The People

Most people think of giraffes and zebras when they think of Africa, however neither of these animals live in the wilds of Cote d'Ivoire. However, there are still many exciting creatures that live in this west African country.

Elephant l Lion l Hippopotamus l Chimpanzee

Elephants - are the largest land animals in the world. They live in Africa and Asia. The African elephant has bigger ears, which it fans to keep itself cool! It also lives longer (up to 60 years!) The female African elephant as well as the male have big ivory tusks.

Lions - are LARGE cats. They live in big groups called "prides." The prides hunt together both in the day and the night. Lions have very good eyesight - even at night. They don't like to go near water though, because they are not very good swimmers.

Hippopotamus - love to swim! They are the biggest freshwater mammals on earth! They like to wallow in the mud during the day. Sometimes they like to go for walks on the bottom of riverbeds. During the night, they often get hungry, so they'll climb out of the water to munch on grass for a midnight snack!

Chimpanzees - are apes. They like to sleep in trees and spend most of their days looking for nuts, fruits and ants to eat. They are very smart. They have a thumb on their feet as well as their hands, so they can eat bananas with their hands and feet!
