The Capital of Australial The People l The Animals Canberra is the capital of Australia. After Australia became a nation in 1901, the leaders decided that they needed a new capital. They found a location, and then had an international competition to decide upon the design of the city. The man who won the competition was an American architect from Chicago, named Walter Griffith. The Australian leaders liked the design because it worked well with the Australian landscape. The capital is now about 80 years old, although all of the government offices weren't moved there until after World War II. It is located southwest of Sydney and northeast of Melbourne, and has about 308, 700 people living there. | ![]()
