Red Kangaroo l Koala l Platypus l Emu Red Kangaroo - Kangaroos are marsupials. That means that they carry their babies in a pouch. Although the largest of the kangaroos are called "red" usually only the male kangaroos are red in color. All kangaroos use their big tails to help them balance. Their powerful back legs help them jump, sometimes as far as 10 meters (more than 30 ft).Koala - The Koala is a marsupial too. The Koala spends most of its life in eucalyptus trees and loves to eat the leaves. It gets most of its water from those leaves and so hardly ever need to take a drink! Koalas are soft and cuddly, but they have very long claws, which they use to climb trees. Platypus - The Platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs! It looks like several different animals all in one. It has a bill like a duck and a tail like a beaver and dark brown fur. It builds its home in creek banks. It loves the water and can swim under water for up to three minutes without coming up for air! Emu - is a large bird. Like and ostrich, it doesn't fly but has strong legs. Not only can it run fast, but it can also swim! The male emu takes care of the eggs and chicks when they hatch. Emus live in the grasslands of Australia and eat grass, insects, fruit and seeds. |
