Hospital Vozandes-Quito is a missionary urban general hospital strategically located on the north side of Ecuador’s capital city. The hospital serves as a trauma center and has residencies in family practice and ophthalmology. Current inpatient bed capacity: is 76. The original hospital opened on Oct. 12, 1955, and continues to expand in response to the high patient volumes.
Hospital services includes emergency room (20 beds) with two ambulance services, outpatient with most clinical and surgical specialties available, intensive care, inpatient hospitalization, surgery, cardiopulmonary, physical and occupational therapy, speech and swallowing therapy, clinical laboratory, pathology laboratory, microbiology laboratory, radiology, endoscopy, pharmacy, home care, pastoral services, social services, medical records, admissions, food service, laundry, housekeeping, maintenance, computer services, accounting, head and neck clinic, palliative care, surgical oncology and mental health.
Outpatient care specialties include anesthesia, internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, family medicine, vascular surgery, emergency, ophthalmology, pathology, plastic surgery, neurology, orthopedic surgery, nephrology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, otolaryngology, pulmonary medicine, neurosurgery, rheumatology, urology, dermatology, pediatric surgery, gastroenterology, maxillary/facial surgery, hematology and oncology, laboratory, infectious diseases, radiology, endocrinology, odontology, genetics, immunology and allergies.
In 2008 the hospital served nearly 197,000 patients. This includes some 7,000 inpatients, 147,000 outpatients and nearly 43,000 emergency room patients. Through the chaplaincy service an average of 46 people come to Christ each month. More than 8,000 patients were helped with nearly $340,000 in charity funds.
Each Saturday the hospital offers the community social program, Manos Globales (Global Hands). It provides the same medical specialties that Hospital Vozandes-Quito offers at the same level but at a lower price (US$5). The program provides medical attention while addressing patients’ spiritual needs. Considering surgery requests with costs corresponding to the patient’s economic situation. HCJB Global Hands covers up to 100 percent of patient costs. Average weekly attendance is 200.
The hospital also operates Vozandes Clinics, family practice and eye clinics that bring affordable, Christ-centered healthcare, primarily to poor people in Quito and other cities of Ecuador. Medical staff saw 51,620 patients in 2008, including those coming for dental work, lab tests and physical therapy. Most clinics are managed by graduates of the family practice residency program at Hospital Vozandes Quito. Specialists such as orthopedic surgeons and ophthalmologists also see patients in the clinics.
