Hospital Vozandes del Oriente in Shell, Ecuador, is a ministry of HCJB Global, also known as World Radio Missionary Fellowship. This ministry has been serving the needs of the people of the Ecuadorian Amazon since 1958. Hospital Vozandes del Oriente is a primary care hospital with 28 inpatient beds attended by a staff of four family practice doctors, a general surgeon, and an anesthesiologist. Upwards of 18,000 outpatients are served and over 600 major surgeries are performed each year. Hospital Vozandes del Oriente is an evangelical mission hospital. Its mission statement reads: To grow in the grace and knowledge of God and to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ to chosen The ministry of Hospital Vozandes del Oriente can be divided into three parts: spiritual, physical, and education. While health care is an obvious need, Christians understand that the human life span is very short in comparison to the eternal life we have with Jesus Christ. The practice of medicine must take into account that to heal a man physically and then leave him dead spiritually represents a seriously incomplete treatment plan. Moreover, the work at Hospital Vozandes del Oriente represents a partnership between nationals and ex-patriates. Interns and family practice residents from the mission's sister hospital regularly come to Shell for month-long rotations as part of their training in family and tropical medicine. In this way the future physicians of Ecuador are trained to provide compassionate and Christ-like care to the people of their country. ![]() MAF plane over the jungle Hospital Vozandes del Oriente exists to serve those marginalized segments of Ecuadorian society who do not have access to health care. It is estimated that upwards of 40 percent of the population of Ecuador does not have access to health care due to economic, cultural or political barriers. Hospital Vozandes exists to serve these underserved populations with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. |
