Young Man Near Death Finds Physical, Spiritual Healing

by Wendy Walker

At about 3 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, eight people attacked a young man named Heriberto, kicking, beating and stabbing him, causing severe internal injuries.

His family took him to a clinic in the central Ecuadorian city of Riobamba where he had three operations, including having his spleen removed. But Heriberto showed little improvement, and in desperation the family decided to take him to Hospital Vozandes-Quito.

Heriberto was in critical condition when he arrived at the intensive care unit. Doctors soon discovered that he had a perforated stomach and that his liver was hemorrhaging. As a result, he underwent seven abdominal surgeries. His life hung in the balance, and many days he drifted in and out of consciousness.

The chaplains at Hospital Vozandes-Quito often visited and prayed with Heriberto. His family also stayed with him throughout his time in the hospital, especially his mother who was constantly by his side.

During his 60-day stay, the staff shared the love of Christ with Heriberto, and he made a decision to accept Christ as His Savior. From that time on his attitude and demeanor improved markedly, and his health started improving as well.

Heriberto has now returned home but will need parenteral alimentation (internal feeding by tube) for six months. He may also need additional surgeries. Although Heriberto’s recovery has been difficult, the Lord has been glorified through his ordeal. He has sought reconciliation with the mother of his children and with his father.

Heriberto lives with his parents and studies at Colegio Maldonado in Riobamba. His father, Juan, is a 41-year-old bricklayer with a monthly income of $200. Heriberto’s mother, Esperanza, sells meat twice a week at the market. Heriberto is their only son.

The family investigated the crime, found out who was responsible and has taken legal action. However, it will take more than a year before the case goes to trial.

Meanwhile, pray for Herbierto and his family as he continues to heal. Also pray that he would grow in the Lord and for peace as he and his family prepare for the trial.
