How did the first Listener’s Club get started?

After HCJB began broadcasting Spotlight, Christians who listened to HCJB told their friends, neighbors and co-workers about the program. There was a tremendous response from listeners who wanted texts for the program. HCJB began sending texts to listeners upon request and, in November 2002, started “The Listener’s Club” by inviting the 45 listener’s on its email list. Twenty four of those Listeners attended the first Club. The Club coordinator recruited as many English speakers as possible, found a place (a local church) for the Club to meet and held the Club once a month for listeners to practice speaking English.

Today's Listeners' Club in Quito

Today there are more than 3,100 listeners on the Quito, Ecuador email list and the Club meets weekly instead of monthly. Listeners realize that Spotlight has a Christian perspective and that they will be meeting with English speaking Christians at the Club. It is now a ministry of a local church which considers the Club to be a place for developing relationships that may open the spiritual doors of listeners’ lives.
