Answers to your questions!Do you need a radio to hold a Listeners? Club? Where can you get a copy of the text? What age should the volunteers be? Do you need to provide snacks? What if they want us to teach grammar or special groups? Where do you hold the Listeners' Club? What do I do if listener wants to meet with me one on one? Do you need a radio to hold a Listeners’ Club?Although Spotlight is broadcasted on the radio across the world, you do not need to tune into the radio to have your Listener's Club. All programs are available for download at the official Spotlight web siteReturn to Top Where can you get a copy of the text?Copies of the text are available at the official Spotlight web site and in our Programs and Activities section of this website. There, you will find copies of the text for listeners, Volunteer handouts, and activity handouts where available.Return to Top Where do you get volunteers?Check out English speaking international churches, local missions, embassies, and international workers that may be in your area. Some of your best volunteers are those whose mother tongue is not English but have acquired a high level of proficiency in speaking English. Return to TopWhat age should the volunteers be?We have found that volunteers are most effective (and committed) if they are a least a high school graduate.Return to Top How do you find listeners? If Spotlight is broadcast in your area, ask the station if they would put your email address put at the end of the broadcast indicating that you will send the texts of the broadcasts out each week. Your mailing list will grow from there and you can use it to notify people of your Listeners’ Club. We recommend that you NOT advertise in newspapers or radio. You will be overwhelmed. It is necessary to start out small. If you don’t have a local station broadcasting the Spotlight program you can send out flyers to the local university to let people know, who are already studying English that they now have a place to practice speaking.Return to Top Do you need to provide refreshments?Refreshments and coffee are not an essential part of the Club, but we have found that it is an excellent way for people to interact and start building relationships.Return to Top How are you funding the Club?We have begun to collect 50 cents per person to cover the cost of photocopies, refreshments, coffee, and security.Return to Top Are there security issues? This may depend on the culture and location you are ministering in. Many of our female volunteers are asked by men for their phone numbers. Don’t give them out. It is usually under the guise of wanting to practice English but more often than not they simply want a date.We hire guards for the night of the club to watch cars and direct people around the area. We don’t leave anything out in the building that could be taken. We are often meeting with people we don’t know, so always take reasonable precautions.Return to Top What if someone wants us to teach grammar or special groups? We have had to learn to say “no”. There has been more than enough to do without adding projects that our listeners suggest. Determine what it is you want to accomplish and then set boundaries so that you can reach those goals. You will be inundated with requests to do more, and again we say, learn to say “no” to those things that are not a part of your mission focus. We must emphasize that the Spotlight Listener's Club is not a program intended to formally teach English. Rather, it is an opportunity for individuals to practice speaking English. Encourage the listener to continue coming to the Club on a weekly basis, and take part in the other opportunities you have to practice speaking English ( Bible studies, Sunday school, church etc).Return to Top Where do you hold the Listeners' Club?We hold our Listeners’ Club in an English speaking church. It is our hope that listeners develop a certain level of comfort going in and out of a church. That way, when we invite them to come to church, it is not such a foreign location for them. We recommend a building which has suitable acoustics for conversations and enough space for potential future growth. Classrooms or the space to spread out will be helpful.Return to Top What do I do if a listener wants to meet with me one on one?The whole idea is to build relationships but you need to be discerning. We advise that you limit the contact between listeners and English Volunteers to the Club night, the church the Club is held at, or an office when others are present. Once a relationship is built and you know the person well enough, use your discretion to move ahead from there.Return to Top |
