In Ecuador, there is a variety of foods. Although, unlike the United States, there are only supermarkets located in the capital, Quito (key-toe). But, down in the small town of Shell, we find other ways to feed ourselves. Puyo, a neighboring town, provides the grocery stockup. A typical Ecuadorian meal is rice, meat, soup, and vegetables. There is a restuarant called La Casona de Maria (translated it means the house of Maria) uptown. Several missionary families located in Shell like to go there for a break from cooking. There is no menu and whatever is being served is what you get. Different fruits are usually blended into juices and served with the rest of the meal. Ecuadorian fruits are very different from the States'. A few of my favorite ones that are blended into juices are mora (a kind of sour raspberry), naranjilla (a nice breakfast juice), and maracuya (a tart fruit). Another restaurant, much nicer than La Casona de Maria, called Flor de Canela (cinnamon flower) provides a menu and serves a wide variety of meats and soups.
