Would you like to know how you can have a personal relationship with God that will transform your life? If so, here are some things that will help you (all verses are from the New International Version):
A. God loves you and desires to have a personal relationship with you.
His Word, the Bible says: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:1-6
"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" John 1:12
I came that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10
B. Every person has rejected God's plan in order to go their own way (sin). Our rejection of God has separated us from Him. Because of this, we can't experience the love and forgiveness God planned for us and are destined to eternity without Him in hell.
His Word, the Bible says: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death, (eternal separation from God) but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." John 3:36
C. God sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our sin and show us how to have a relationship with God. Jesus took our punishment and died in our place.
His Word, the Bible says: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us." 1 John 3:16
"This is how God showed his love among us; He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him." 1 John 4:9
"God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
D. To experience God's love and plan for our life, we must recognize that our only hope is to place our trust (faith) in Him, acknowledging He is truly God.
His Word, the Bible says: "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." Romans 10:9-10.
How do we call on Him to save us?
First, admit that you, like all of us, have rejected God's plan and are a sinner. Recognize that because of sin, you are separated from Him and deserve His judgment.
Realize that the only way to find forgiveness from God and to begin a personal relationship with Him is to accept the provision He offers us through Jesus. Then talk to God (pray) and tell Him you have chosen to believe in His Son. You can pray in your own words, or pray something similar to this:
"Dear God, I know that I'm a sinner, but I'm sorry for my sins and I want to turn away from them. I know that I deserve your condemnation and I cannot save myself. I am thankful that you love me and I want to have a relationship with you from this day on.
I believe that Jesus Christ is your Son and that He died for me and that He lives today. I now put my trust in you and accept you as my Savior. Thank you for saving me. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen."
