As communications needs and technologies converge, the Technology Center is finding itself in a position to satisfy multiple needs of ministry partners by helping them make use of satellites. Satellites are now being used by HCJB Global and its partners for Internet-style streaming audio, for data file transfers, e-mail communications, long-distance telephone calls, and Web browsing, as well as the delivery of live audio programs to radio stations.
Today, the rapid increase in popularity of home satellite delivery systems in many countries illustrates the ability to reach millions of potential listeners with the gospel of Jesus Christ in the privacy of their own homes. Many have come to Christ as a result.
Satellite usage at HCJB Global
In 1992, HCJB Global began to seriously contemplate using satellite technology as a program delivery platform. This technology eventually joined the ranks with shortwave, AM, FM, and television-ministry tools that were already in use. (ALAS uplink photo here)
The ALAS satellite network went on the air on August 10, 1994, delivering Spanish-language programming to local stations scattered throughout Latin America. This ministry evolved as a joint project between HCJB Global and Trans World Radio. Today, the network serves around 100 affiliate stations and continues to grow. Also on the air now are satellite radio networks in the U.S., Russia, North Africa, Haiti, and Papua New Guinea. The team at the Technology Center was instrumental in making these networks a reality.
Personnel at the Technology Center have been involved in the development of satellite-related technology, including receivers, multiplexers, automation systems, and customized tools for network control. In 1995 some of our team, along with Crown International, pioneered the creation of a Multiple Channel Per Carrier (MCPC) satellite delivery platform. Our desire in the satellite communications field is to help ministry partners achieve great effectiveness in the use of this technology.
