In the Sub-Saharan Africa Region, HCJB Global works with 58 partners operating 95 stations broadcasting in 71 languages in 32 countries.
Here are some examples:
Benin: HCJB Global Voice worked with the Council of Protestant and Evangelical Churches of Benin to help put a Christian FM station on the air in Cotonou in 1998. The station broadcasts the gospel in French, English and seven tribal languages. Partner ministry SIM also records programs in eight languages at the studios in Parakou. A nationwide FM network is being planned.
Burkina Faso: HCJB Global Voice has worked alongside local partners in 11 cities of Burkina Faso to help begin local radio ministries. Broadcasts air in nine languages: Arabic, Bissa, Dioula, French, Fulfuldé, Goulmacéma, Kasséna, Lélé and Mooré. Partner stations are being planned for at least one more city in Burkina Faso.
Central African Republic: HCJB Global Voice worked with Grace Brethren Mission and local believers in Bangui, Central African Republic, to put a Christian FM station on the air in May 2001.
Chad: HCJB Global Voice worked with local partner Voice of Hope Radio to establish an FM station in N’Djamena in 2003. The mission also assisted the Church of the Lutheran Brethren with a studio and station in Pala.
Democratic Republic of Congo: HCJB Global Voice works with local partners in the Democratic Republic of Congo to broadcast the gospel on Christian stations in Boma, Bukavu and Kinshasa. Programs go out in English, French, Kikongo Fioti, Lingala, Luba and Swahili. Weekly programs in the Songe and Kikongo San Salvador languages also air from local FM stations in the country.
Liberia: HCJB Global Voice works in partnership with ELWA, a ministry founded by SIM in Monrovia in 1954, to air the gospel across the country and West Africa. The radio station was destroyed twice by civil war, first in 1990 and again in 1996. ELWA most recently went back on the air in 1997 with a small FM transmitter. Then in 2000 HCJB Global Voice provided a low-power shortwave transmitter, again enabling the station to cover the entire region. ELWA broadcasts the gospel in 10 languages and plans to add more as resources become available.
Madagascar: HCJB Global Voice has helped establish three Christian FM radio stations in Madagascar together with local partners. The most recent station went on the air in Ihosy in October 2003, broadcasting to the under-reached Bara tribe with additional programming in Malagassy, French and English. Partner stations also have been planted in the cities of Diego Suarez and Antananarivo.
Malawi: In partnership with African Bible College, HCJB Global Voice helped plant a Christian radio station in Lilongwe, Malawi, in 1995. The station airs programs in Chichewa and English. Staff members from the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart, Ind., also installed FM transmitters at stations in two Malawian cities, Blantyre and Mzuzu, in 2000. Recently HCJB Global Hands has joined with the Partners in Hope Medical Clinic, assigning three medical missionaries to the outreach.
Mozambique: Eight hours of daily Christian Portuguese programs airs on an FM station in Maputo, Mozambique, as the result of a cooperative effort involving HCJB Global Voice, Trans World Radio and Radio Africa Network.
Nigeria: HCJB Global Voice, together with SIM and the Evangelical Church of West Africa, airs weekly half-hour programs on a local FM station in Nigeria in the Igbo language. HCJB Global Voice has also helped with a partner station in Umuahia.
Senegal: HCJB Global Voice works in partnership with Brethren Assemblies and SIM in Dakar, Senegal, to make weekly Wolof Christian broadcasts available across the country on an FM network. More than 3 million people speak Wolof.
Tanzania: Staff members from the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart, Ind., have worked with local churches, the Lutheran Radio Center and Trans World Radio to put FM radio stations on the air in three Tanzanian cities. HCJB Global Voice is also working with Radio Africa Network, a ministry of partner CCFm in South Africa, to build a radio network based in the capital city of Dar es Salaam. The first of these stations went on the air in 2002.
Togo: International Media Ministries, HCJB Global Voice’s partner in Lomé, Togo, broadcasts 17 hours of daily programming on an FM station in 10 local languages. The SIM studio in Parakou, Benin, also records Christian Kotokoli programs that air on local stations in Togo.
Uganda: HCJB Global Voice, together with the Evangelical Churches of Kampala and FEBA Radio, broadcast the gospel locally in Uganda via two FM transmitters. Broadcasts also air on Radio ABC, a ministry of Africa Bible College in Kampala. In addition, HCJB Global Voice has worked with Jesus Focus Ministries to put a 500-watt FM station on the air in Masaka. Programs air in English and Luganda.
Zambia: HCJB Global Voice added weekly Bemba programs in 2000. The programs air on Zambia’s Radio One Network, covering the country and much of Malawi, going out via shortwave, AM and FM.
