Missionary Focus - Betty Van Engen

Betty Van Engen, Quito: “Pray that I would be sensitive to God’s leading in making decisions in response to the many changes taking place in the mission’s Latin America Region. Pray also for God’s wisdom and the Holy Spirit’s leading in my ministry as a counselor, addressing the complex and diverse needs of HIV/AIDS patients. I also help as a counselor in a ministry called The Way Out.” Betty serves as a nurse/counselor in the HIV/AIDS clinic at Hospital Vozandes-Quito.

Regional Staff on Track to Plant 25 Media Outlets this Year

Praise God that staff members in the Asia Pacific Region helped start six media outlets (including five FM stations), repaired four other outlets and held six radio training events in the first quarter of 2013. Pray for continued open doors and for endurance for the staff and partners to maintain this pace.

Partner Station Established in High-Suicide Area of Thailand

Praise God for a second radio installation and announcer training in a northern Thailand province where suicide is reportedly high. A local hospital sent seven nurses and staff to be trained as announcers for the new station, recognizing the impact of the first station. Praise Him for the many listeners coming to Christ.

Praise the Lord for the opportunity that new HCJB Global appointee Emily Ibarra had to provide video production support for three ministry partners in Peru in April. She also helped distribute fixed-tuned, solar-powered SonSet® radios to listeners of the partner station in the country’s remote Cotahuasi Canyon.

Spanish Satellite Radio Network Moving to Internet Stream Distribution

Pray for the transition as Spanish radio programs now distributed by ALAS, the Latin American satellite network, will switch to Internet stream distribution. Some 56 stations in Latin America, the U.S. and Spain currently download programming via satellite.

Work Team Helps with Orphanage Ministry in Cap-Haitien

Here are requests from the Technology Center:

•    Praise God for a work team that helped partner Kids Alive International build a fourth residential home at its orphanage in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, in February.

•    Pray as Jeff and Jackie Benedict settle back into the work in Elkhart after their time of service in the Asia Pacific region. Praise God for His provision of housing.

•    Give thanks that Alan Good made repairs to the radio transmitter being used by partner Laban Ministries in Kinshasa, Dem. Rep. of Congo, in March. He also helped with a site survey for a potential solar-powered station.

•    Praise God for the 10 engineering students from Cedarville University who helped during spring break.
